Rock Creek Corner has a colorful history dating back to the late 1930’s. The cross roads at 185th and West Union have been a hub of activity for generations. Originally a general store and barber shop, folks would pick up provisions, grab a pickle from the pickle barrel and warm their hands by the wood stove while catching up on community happenings. You could follow up with a hair cut and shave, then stock up on some explosives from the dynamite shack out back. No joke!
In 2007, Christy and Robert Bennett-Hanes bought “Rock Creek Café & Pub” from beloved local character George Athanasakis, renovated it inside and out and updated the menu to feature their own recipes — real food made from scratch using local and seasonal ingredients. Their assortment of comfort foods rotate to showcase produce from their own on site and off site gardens while keeping such favorites as pizza and the best calamari you can find anywhere. From soups, salads and stews to gourmet mac n cheese, chicken pot pie and dry aged Oregon-raised beef, buffalo burgers and chili. It’s honest food that will satisfy any palate. Experience it in the comfort of the all-ages dining room with its comfy, high backed booths, or in the cozy casual bar, where you can tune in to your favorite team and enjoy the same delicious dishes available in the dining room plus drink specials, food specials and a great late night menu.
Times have surely changed, but Rock Creek Corner is still the neighborhood place where people like to gather. A local, independently-owned establishment where kids, families and good times all converge. Where you can put your feet up and let your hair down: a one-of-a-kind restaurant and bar on the westernmost edge of Portland where “The Country and City Meet”.
